This catalogue is based nearly exclusively on coins preserved in the Franciscan Biblical Museum in Jerusalem and will bring a great amount of new material; a rough estimate is that between one fourth and one third of the total has remained unpublished so far
Edited with Historical and Geographical Introduction by Michele Piccirillo.
«After twenty years of work we are glad to present the publication of The Catalogue of the City-coins of the Decapolis and Provincia Arabia, one of the most important sections of the numismatic collection of the Franciscan Biblical Museum in Jerusalem. The work was delayed by the sudden and untimely death, on June 23rd 1973, of Fr Augustus Spijkerman, curator of the Museum and author of the catalogue. His documentation with added historical and geographical introductions, indexes and up to date bibliography are edited by Fr Michele Piccirillo, new curator of the Museum and professor of Biblical Geography and History in the Franciscan Biblical Institute. “This catalogue” – as Fr Spijkerman wrote before his death – “is based nearly exclusively on coins preserved in our Museum and will bring a great amount of new material; a rough estimate is that between one fourth and one third of the total has remained unpublished so far”. We wish to recall here that we prepared, during the early 1972’s, special Greek Types (Greco Lapidario Antico con variazioni) for this book.»
