The Greek inscriptions published here come from different localities in the Negev, discovered at different times: at Oboda during my excavations in the years 1958-61, and at Mampsis, in the years 1965-67.
«The Greek inscriptions published here come from different localities in the Negev, discovered at different times: at Oboda during my excavations in the years 1958-61, and at Mampsis, in the years 1965-67. I stumbled upon the inscriptions found at Sobata while I was working on the chronology of the churches of Mampsis. These are published with the blessing of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem, a participant in the work of the Colt Expedition at Sobata. The preparation of the epigraphic material of Sobata was not easy matter. Despite these difficulties I decided to include also these in the present publication. In the archaeological campaign at Elusa during the summer of 1980, we discovered a new inscription which we add to the present publication. My original intention was to publish separately also the other inscriptions from the other towns of the Negev, but I was encouraged by the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum to include them all in this publication».(from the Foreword by the Author)
